What Are InfiniReels Slots? How the Expanding-Reel Mechanic Works

What Are InfiniReels Slots? How the Expanding-Reel Mechanic Works

Javier Domínguez10/07/202610/13/2026

Most online slots begin with a fixed grid and keep that layout from one spin to the next. InfiniReels takes a different approach. A game can begin with only a few reels, then stretch wider when winning combinations keep appearing.

So, What Are InfiniReels Slots? They are expanding-reel games built around NetEnt’s InfiniReels mechanic, first introduced with Gods of Gold: InfiniReels in 2020.

Instead of relying on a permanently fixed number of reels, qualifying wins can add new reels to the right, creating more bet ways and allowing one successful sequence to become increasingly large.

How Did InfiniReels Begin?

NetEnt officially introduced the InfiniReels brand in 2020 with Gods of Gold: InfiniReels.

The original game starts on a compact 3-reel by 3-row grid. NetEnt described it as the first title in its portfolio to use its “infinite bet ways” concept, with each successful extension adding another reel to the playing area.

Interestingly, NetEnt was not the only developer exploring this idea.

Australian developer ReelPlay had already released El Dorado Infinity Reels in November 2019.

NetEnt and ReelPlay later announced an intellectual-property agreement covering their respective InfiniReels and Infinity Reels brands after independently developing similar concepts.

That distinction matters because InfiniReels and Infinity Reels are related ideas, but they are not simply two spellings of the same branded feature.

How Does the InfiniReels Mechanic Work?

The basic idea is surprisingly easy to understand.

In the original Gods of Gold implementation, every new paid game round begins on a 3×3 grid with 27 ways to win. Matching symbols must appear on at least three adjacent reels, beginning from the leftmost reel.

If a winning combination lands, another reel is added to the right.

The additional reel can extend the current combination. If another qualifying win occurs, the grid grows again. This process can continue until the winning sequence stops.

At that point, the game evaluates and pays the accumulated winning ways, and the next round returns to the original compact layout.

That growing-grid mechnic is the defining feature of InfiniReels.

Why Do the Number of Winning Ways Grow So Quickly?

A traditional slot might have 10, 20, or 50 fixed paylines. InfiniReels uses a ways-to-win model instead.

The original game begins with three rows on each of three reels:

3 × 3 × 3 = 27 ways.

Add a fourth reel and the theoretical number becomes:

3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81 ways.

A fifth reel increases that to 243, while six reels can produce 729 possible symbol-position routes.

NetEnt explained that every added reel in Gods of Gold multiplies the number of bet ways by three.

That exponential growth is what makes the screen feel increasingly dramatic during a long winning chain. The slot does not merely add more symbols; it adds many more possible routes through the expanding grid.

Are There Paylines in InfiniReels Slots?

Not in the traditional sense.

Gods of Gold: InfiniReels specifically uses infinite bet ways rather than fixed paylines. The official game rules state that there are no bet lines.

Instead, matching symbols can appear in any position as long as they occupy consecutive adjacent reels from left to right according to the game’s rules.

Suppose a matching symbol appears twice on reel one, once on reel two, and three times on reel three. Those multiple symbol positions can create several winning ways simultaneously.

This is one reason ways-to-win games can look much less rigid than old-style line slots.

Players do not need symbols to form a neat horizontal or diagonal line. What matters is whether the required matching symbols occupy eligible reels.

What Special Features Can Appear With InfiniReels?

Expanding reels provide the foundation, but individual games can build additional features around the concept.

Gods of Gold includes Re-Spins, Multi-Slam, Wild symbols, and Win Spins.

The Multi-Slam feature can randomly add two or three reels during a win instead of adding only one. According to the published rules, a Multi-Slam guarantees a win from that extension.

Win Spins are triggered by three or more Scatter symbols. The original game awards ten Win Spins for the initial trigger, with extra Scatters adding additional spins. Every Win Spin guarantees a winning bet way.

Wild symbols provide another interesting twist because they can only appear from reel four onward in Gods of Gold.

That means the expanding grid can introduce symbol possibilities that were not even present on the original three reels.

Later InfiniReels-style games may use different bonus structures, so these exact features should not be assumed to apply universally.

InfiniReels vs Infinity Reels: Are They the Same?

No, although the names and general concepts are clearly similar.

InfiniReels is associated with NetEnt, while Infinity Reels is ReelPlay’s branded expanding-reel mechanic.

Both developers publicly acknowledged the similarity. Their 2020 agreement stated that they had independently followed similiar ideas and would cooperate to strengthen and protect their respective brands.

ReelPlay’s implementation also commonly starts with a small reel area and expands during successful sequences. However, its individual payout calculations, multipliers, jackpot features, and extension triggers can differ between games.

ReelPlay describes Infinity Reels as its expanding-reel mechanic where winning momentum causes the reel set to grow.

For SEO searches, the two terms often get mixed together, but technically they should be treated as separate branded systems.

Are InfiniReels the Same as Megaways?

Not really.

Megaways typically changes the number of symbols appearing on individual reels from spin to spin, creating a variable number of possible winning combinations.

InfiniReels takes another route. Its key concept is adding additional reels during a successful sequence.

A Megaways grid might begin a spin with six reels but vary how many symbols appear vertically. An InfiniReels game may begin with only three reels and physically grow wider as qualifying wins continue.

Both systems move beyond conventional fixed paylines, but they reach that goal differently.

This distinction is usefull for players comparing modern slot mechanics because “more ways to win” does not always mean the same mathematical structure.

What About RTP and Volatility?

InfiniReels does not automatically determine a game’s RTP.

Those mathematical characteristics depend on the individual title.

For example, the published rules for Gods of Gold list a theoretical RTP of 96.21%. The game was also promoted as a highly volatile release when NetEnt introduced it.

High volatility means short-term results can vary considerably, particularly when larger prizes depend on relatively uncommon extended sequences.

The possibility of adding many reels should therefore not be interpreted as a guarantee that long chains will appear frequently.

As with any slot, players should check RTP, volatility, betting limits, and the paytable separately rather than judging a game solely by its headline feature.

What Are InfiniReels Slots? They are expanding-reel games built around NetEnt’s infinite bet ways concept, where successful combinations can cause new reels to appear and dramatically increase the number of possible winning routes.

The mechanic makes a spin feel increasingly larger as a streak continues. Before playing, check the specific paytable and features, because individual InfiniReels titles can implement the idea differently.
